About

Gippsland is fortunate to have some of Victoria’s healthiest river systems. But the last 12 years of drought have hit these rivers hard. Inflows have been reduced by 41 percent.

In 2009 and 2010, Gippsland is the focus of the Victorian Government’s latest Sustainable Water Strategy. The strategy will assess Gippsland’s water resource availability and demand over the next 50 years, given the added pressures of changes in climate, land use and demographics.

We’re going to be working with the people of Gippsland to speak up for the region’s rivers. This is a critical opportunity to find a better balance between water for consumption and water for a healthy environment.

Public consultation has now begun on the Gippsland Sustainable Water Strategy. A discussion paper was released on 15 July 2009 as a first step in the process and is open for public consultation for two months.

The next stage in the process is for DSE to consider all the submissions and – with the guidance of the Consultative Committee (that EV is part of) – devise a Draft Strategy with a suite of proposals to put out again for public comment, which they are aiming to have out before the end of this year.
