About

The NT is a beautiful place. You know that. But the Territory needs your help. Despite strong community opposition the NT Government has opened up the Territory to industrial shale fracked gas fields. When fracking goes ahead, it could increase Australian carbon emissions by up to 5%. Analysis from the Australia institute has found that emissions from NT Fracking identified by the Fracking Inquiry would be equivalent to 100 times more than the emissions savings under the Northern Territory Government’s Roadmap to Renewables: 50% by 2030 policy.

Fracking “puts the health of our land, water, communities and culture at risk”, said Eleanor Dixon, a Mudburra Garawa custodian.
Community leaders, traditional custodians, community members, businesses and environment groups have pledged to stand together against proposed invasive fracked gas fields that could compromise water supplies for tens of thousands of Territorians. Gas is not a transition fuel. The proposed tripling of global LNG capacity risks introducing decades of emissions of methane, a potent and difficult-to-monitor greenhouse gas, at odds with the Paris climate agreement. There needs to be a moratorium on all new gas infrastructure and development – including opening up the Barossa field and the Beetaloo Basin. The Territory can be part of the solution, leading the way in renewable clean energy. Environment Centre NT is working with a coalition of organisations and community groups to stop fracking and advocate for a low carbon economy driven by renewables.

Their plan to store 6 million litres of highly toxic chemicals and waste water in open ponds on local cattle stations in the Beetaloo Basin over the Wet season is unacceptable. Find out more information from the Don’t Frack The Territory and Lock The Gate websites.
