About

Campaign: Expansion of Roxby Downs
BHP Billiton’s plan for a new open pit mine at Roxby Downs will increase South Australia’s total greenhouse emissions by 4.1 million tones, an increase of over 12% annually. This plan undermines South Australia’s contribution to a safe climate and risks the wellbeing of future generations. In this state election, Premier Rann has the opportunity to show real leadership as climate change minister. We ask that he commit to deep-cuts in greenhouse pollution by 2020 and make approval of the expansion dependent on it being carbon neutral. Two simple things BHP can do to achieve this are purchasing renewable energy from the smart grid and reducing diesel emissions by maintaining operations underground.
