Clearing the air

This campaign asks all Australian Environment Ministers to cut air pollution and protect our climate and our health by supporting stronger air pollution standards.
Stronger air pollution standards for three dangerous pollutants connected to the burning of fossil fuels: nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide and ozone.

About

Sign the petition: Get stronger air pollution standards to protect our climate and our health. Later this year, Australian Environment Ministers will meet to decide on new air pollution standards for three dangerous pollutants connected to the burning of fossil fuels: nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide and ozone. These pollutants can have harmful effects on people’s health — even at levels well below Australia’s current standards. We need strong, health-based air pollution standards to reduce the risk and harm to people’s health these pollutants cause, and to accelerate the transition away from dirty fossil fuels to clean, safer technologies.

This is our chance to secure stronger air pollution standards. Will you sign the petition asking all Australian Environment Ministers to cut air pollution and protect our climate and our health by supporting stronger standards? For more information on the standards we’re calling for, read this Expert Position Statement from health and environment groups. To all Australian Environment Ministers: please support stronger air pollution standards to protect our climate and our health.

Campaign Details

Group Leading this Campaign: Climate and Health Alliance

Campaign Target Type: ,

Who this Campaign is Targeting: All Australian Environment Ministers

Main Issue of the Campaign:

Campaign Ran From: 2020 to 2022

Campaign Outcome:

Outcome Evidence: Variation to Ambient Air Quality NEPM - ozone, nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide: At its meeting on 15 April 2021, the National Environment Protection Council (NEPC) agreed to vary the AAQ NEPM by approving an amending instrument to the AAQ NEPM. Climate and Health Alliance made a submission to the public consultation on this amendment and contributed to the "Expert Position Statement on health-based standards for Australian regulated thresholds of nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide and ozone in ambient air" which laid our recommendations for the amendment. Comparing CAHA's recommendations to the final changes adopted by NEPC, it does not appear that NEPC's changes fully reflected CAHA's recommendations. However the standards were strengthened from the previous AAQ NEPM. It is possible to find a summary of the public consultation, and the NEPC’s rationale for final measures adopted in the April 2021 document “Summary of Public Submissions and National Environment Protection Council Response”. (Ascertained May 2024.)
