What causes pollution?
Several sources contribute to air pollution, diminishing the quality of the air we breathe:
* Wood heaters and fire pits emit substantial amounts of smoke and particulates.

* Trucks and older vehicles emit higher levels of gases and particulates compared to newer, more efficient models
* Cooking with oil over very high heat (e.g. stir frying).

How do we monitor air quality?
Monitoring air quality is essential for understanding pollution levels and taking appropriate action. We utilise two PurpleAir air quality monitors located at Dwell in Ascot Vale and at a second site near Steele Creek, Niddrie. These monitors provide real-time data on PM2.5 concentrations, enabling us to track pollution trends and alert the community when air quality deteriorates. By continuously monitoring air quality, we can make informed decisions to protect public health and the environment.
What can you do to reduce your impact?
Everyone can contribute to improving air quality through simple, everyday actions.
* Consider choosing electric vehicles over those that run on fuel.
* Ensure your vehicle is running efficiently by keeping up with regular servicing, which reduces emissions.
* Avoid burning wood, which releases significant pollutants into the air.
* Use a method of active transport to get around your area.
How can you stay healthy?
To maintain your health in areas with fluctuating air quality, it’s important to stay informed and take proactive measures. Regularly check the air quality using reliable sources or air quality monitors. On days when pollution levels are high (e.g. bush fires) you can do the following:
* Switch from polluting sources of heating (wood fires) to clean and energy efficient methods such as using your air conditioner on HEAT mode – remember to regularly clean your filters.
* Limit outdoor activities and stay indoors as much as possible.
* Wear a P2/N95 mask can help filter out harmful particles.
* Run a HEPA purifier to keep your indoor air clean – stick with reputable brands such as Samsung, Blue Air, InovaAir, Dyson, Honeywell, or Philips.
* Use an externally vented rangehood when cooking. Set it on high fan speed when you are frying with oil. Crack open a nearby window to get better airflow.
