About

The Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS) is the Rudd Government’s big ticket climate change plan. The aim of the CPRS is to reduce emissions via a carbon trading scheme. Carbon trading means a cap is set on the amount of greenhouse gas that can be created, and industry must own a permit for each tonne of pollution they emit. Sounds good in theory right? Well, the devil is in the detail. Without a strong cap and appropriate permit system, the scheme will fail to reduce greenhouse emissions. It’s the plan they are hoping to pass through the Senate. Unfortunately, it’s also hopelessly flawed. Find out how

In its current form, it will not deliver the safe climate future we all deserve. We support a strong and effective scheme that is based on scientific evidence and delivers the cuts to our emissions that we need to avoid dangerous climate change. We can do something about climate change and provide long term economic security for our country. And we can to it while leading international efforts to secure a safe climate. That’s why we’re asking the government to go back to the drawing board and start again.
We’re kicking up a stink

We got together with some of our friends and wrote an open letter to the Prime Minister.
You gotta read this

We were also part of a coalition of over 50 environment and community groups who spoke out against the Rudd Government’s ineffective, unscientific greenhouse reduction target.
Take a look
And – we’ve got a Plan B

The federal government is compromising our safe climate future, but we don’t have to wait for the CPRS to start making a difference. There’s a lot of other things we can do. Our Plan B outlines five things the government can do straight away. Oh yeh, like what?
We need your help

There are many vested interests lobbying to avoid taking responsibility for their pollution. We need to be louder than all of them. Lend us your voice and help us get strong laws that ensure Australia’s emissions go down – starting now! Write to your local MP and ask for a strong CPRS. Who’s my MP?

In the meantime, tell Minister Penny Wong that it’s time to get onto Plan B
