Capricorn Coast (Endangered Wave)
In 2010 Surfrider Foundation Capricorn Coast Branch representatives joined The Keppel and Fitzroy Delta Alliance (KAFDA) to lend their local resources and knowledge to assist in the prevention of 3 industrial developments, including 2 coal export terminals in the Fitzroy River Delta, Keppel Bay and North Curtis Island within the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area.
Specific legislative protection for the area to ensure any future proposals are unable to be made
Threats: Coastal Developments, Polluted Water, Ecosystem Integrity
Proposals to build 3 coal ports are threatening the most northern surf breaks on Australia’s east coast. Surfable waves north of Fraser Island are already very rare. So this threat to the Keppel Bay area and the Surfrider Big Dune surfing reserve, the go to place for locals, has led its caretakers, the Capricorn Coast Branch of Surfrider to begin an international campaign.
The port dredging, sand relocation and water pollution will probably also destroy other surf breaks near the mouth of the Fitzroy River, just south of Yeppoon, which is the largest fresh water in QLD river feeding the Great Barrier Reef (World Heritage Listed Site). Locals won’t just be losing surf breaks, but may also lose the pristine reefs and water quality found in the areas. To grasp the full scale of this battle between mining and tourism, watch the ABC Four Corners story and Get Up’s new ‘Save the Reef’ campaign video (see links below).
